The financial crisis that started initially in the United States has already taken its toll worldwide, particularly in countries which are connected or dependent on the US economy. The global financial meltdown has already affected the livelihoods of the majority.

In the Philippines, massive cutbacks in resources particularly in production as well as in employment are being made as a consequence, in order to address the effects brought about by the said crisis. There has been a slowdown in overseas deployment as well as a decrease in remittances from overseas workers.

To further understand the situation and in order to reconcile with what is currently known based on information being widely disseminated by the media and other sources, the UP SOLAIR Student Council invites you to attend the Symposium on “Global Recession and the Philippine Industrial Relations” on the 21st of February (Saturday), 8:00 AM -12:00 NN at the Bonifacio Hall (SOLAIR) Auditorium. The guest speakers and the topics to be covered during the said event are:

  • Mr. Antonio Asper – Representative from the Federation of Free Workers (FFW)

The state of workers’ organization in the context of the global financial crisis.

  • Mr. Rene Cristobal – VP for Corporate Social Responsibility, Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP)

Employment prospects and opportunities in the context of the current issue

  • Atty. Johnson Canete – Deputy Executive Director, Department of Labor and Employment – National Conciliation and Mediation Board (DOLE-NCMB)

Decline for the demand of labor and remittances and its impact in the country’s

       economic condition.

  • Dr. Rene Ofreneo – University Professor, UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations (UP SOLAIR)

Theoretical framework of unemployment and its effects on the Philippine economy

UP SOLAIR STUDENT COUNCIL

2008-2009

Disclaimer: The questions were formulated by one of the members of the Student Council and have nothing to do with the questions that might be asked during the UP SOLAIR Lakan and Lakambini 2008 pageant night. This entry should not be taken too seriously. Happy reading. 🙂

____________________

Some students were asked about their opinions on some hypothetical questions which more likely are or may not be related to the upcoming UP SOLAIR Lakan and Lakambini 2008, a fund-raising activity of the UP SOLAIR Student Council. These were what they have said:

______________________________________________________________________

Toink!

S1 (Student 1): For the college, anti-virus sa mga computers natin! For the labor sector, of course, promotion of Industrial Peace.

Pang-g*go ba ang tanong na ‘to?

S2: Oo ba.

Bakit?

Question: Ano sa tingin mo ang saysay ng UP SOLAIR Lakan at Lakambini 2008 sa predicted increase sa world unemployment dahil sa global financial crisis?

S4: Meron ba? If there is, I guess eh nakakapagsaya pa din tayo despite the fact na may problemang kinakaharap which is very much alarming. Don’t you agree?

Alam ko naman na this is a fund-raising activity for a more creditable project ng council just like what you did last sem (pertaining to the Current Trends and Developments in Dispute Prevention, Settlement and Resolution in the Philippines).

Follow-up question for S5: Bakit hindi ka nag-enroll ngayong semestre?

S5: Madami kasing gagawin sa office until the year ends. Medyo mahihirapan akong pagsabayin ‘yong work and grad school. Comp and Ben (Compensation and Benefits) kasi ako, next sem na uli ako magi-enroll.

Ahihihi!

Helping HandBammer on Dependability: “Plantsado na, everything has been taken cared of. No need to worry, naayos ko na lahat!”

Binanggit ni Bammer sa General Assembly ng Student Council a week before ng symposium na “Current Trends and Developments in Dispute Prevention, Settlement and Resolution in the Philippines”. Pumunta sina Anto, Mischa at Mcrhon ng gabi before the event to check the venue at kung ang lahat ng facilities na gagamitin ay naka-ayos na. Ang siste, wala pang naka-set-up.

HeartLanie on Love: “Ayoko na, di ako martir ‘no!

Ang shoutout niya ngayon: “Single and loving it!”

Pile of BooksGracey on History: “Sir, the relevance of history in the study of IR is basically… Sir, actually I don’t know the history of IR.

StripperMischa: ” When in doubt… go all out!”
